Contextual Statement

Venus Fly Trap

2022

My work traps and confuses the viewer using identity and a layered, bordered photographic medium to show the confusion in life as we step from one time frame to another.  This has been developed from the methods of making in the amature film development process.

The portrait photos were taken in the lighting studio. They were then enlarged and printed on transparent paper. The photograph of the window is printed on solid matte paper. A scalpel was used to remove its interior. The images are hung 5cm apart on a wooden frame using clips. A wooden dowel is clipped to the bottom and the whole installation is then hung with a white cotton string. A lamp has been placed behind the images to create a combined image when it is on.  When the lamp is off the combined image disappears.

The work is presented in a way that exposes the methods of making in the amateur film development process.  Using the clips to hold the images symbolises the techniques used in the development of film at home.  The wooden dowel represents the spool of an old film camera, and the lamp reflects the shutter exposing the film. The transparent photographs reflect the identity of the subject. With each image taken their essence is trapped. The windows are the borders keeping it from trying to slip out.

Initially my focus was homes built in the 50’s because their architecture appealed to me. This was followed by a long creative block. After some deliberation, I decided to go back to what interested me most; film and the development process. It was there, when I was doing more in-depth research about the emulsion, I began to think about how the emulsion traps the light that is reflected, and is sealed into place like a Venus fly trap.
