Saskia Van Uylenburgh in Arcadian Costume.
Saskia Van Uylenburgh was the first wife of Rembrandt, a Dutch painter. In this painting she is 23 years old and had been married to Rembrandt for a year. She is dressed as Flora, the Roman goddess of spring and fertility. Her dress is a seventeen century version of Renaissance dress.
Charlie as Saskia in Arcadian Costume with a modern twist.
In our response to the painting, we wanted to modernise the depiction of Flora by having the model in a suit. Rather than conforming to the traditional dress and beauty ideals that were expected of women at the time of the painting. This eliminates the dominant presence of pleasing the male gaze that most works had in that time and celebrates the individual for who they are.
